In 1960, Chile was hit by the largest earthquake that has ever been recorded. The strength of the tremors was 9.5 according to the Richter scale. This destroyed the city of Valdivia and Puerto Montt. More than 6,000 inhabitants died, and a lot of people were left homeless.
