35. Argentine Republic
Argentina has the second strongest military force in South America after Brazil. Its branches include the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force, just like in most countries of the world. However, Argentina also has two special security forces – the Naval Prefecture, who protect the maritime territory and rivers, and the National Gendarmerie, who guard the national borders as well as places of strategic importance. Conscription of Argentina was canceled in 1994 and is carried out on a voluntary basis now. At the same time, the parliament has the right to declare conscription if necessary. The army underwent the last transformation in the 60s.
