40. South Dakota : T. Denny Sanford
T. Denny Sanford may own a bank, but these days he seems less interested in collecting money than giving it away. In 2014, Sanford pledged $125 million to Sanford Health–the hospital group named for him–to give its doctors greater access to genetic testing. All together, Sanford, who has signed the Giving Pledge, has given more than $600 million to the organization and also supported the Mayo Clinic and steam-research at U.C. San Diego.
In South Dakota, he has put $10 million toward completing the Crazy Horse Memorial, a sculpture of the Lakota leader stretching more than 500 feet across the Black Hills. In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Sanford chairs United National, a holding company containing First Premier Bank and credit-card company Premier Bankcard.
